A Prayer For a Daughter

A Poem

(I wrote this when my daughter was on tour in Afghanistan. I’m thankful she returned safely.)

Are you there?

I whispered a simple

prayer, into an empty

space, and pushed it

to you,

did you hear?

A reminder of what

is owed, a deed returned

for a deed given, it’s your

turn,

are you there?

A simple hope, a careful

touch, to a heart that rends

so easily, you know her

name, her face

do you see it?

She is loved, and loves

in return, a smile, a warm

embrace for time spent

away, months become years,

we linger with tears held

near in abeyance

are you listening?

She is gone for now, but ever

near, holding, yet letting go,

we need her still, but need

her free to live a life

two steps beyond who we

are

are you watching her?

I whispered a simple

prayer, into an empty

space, and pushed it

to you,

did you hear me?
