Celebrities wouldn't be celebrities if fans didn't take them into their hearts and homes. They're more than actors or basketball players - they are idols, in the same way that a sacred stone is an idol for a religion. You worship them because they have special powers (performing Shakespeare or dunking a basketball) and hope some of what they have will rub off on you.
I find respect a much better emotion to use. Respect their skills, respect their dedication. But some of the best athletes/actors/celebrities ever were pricks - why would you worship or idolize that behavior?
