Education has followed the arc of our planet’s economic journey over the last several hundred years. As we transitioned from one phase to another (agrarian to industrial to service to …) education was there to provide us with the leg up. Get us out of where we were and up into where we were supposed to be … according to our parents, to previous generations and so on. The intent was to provide access to the “new world” opening up.

Education is great and important and currently — I agree — out of date.

Technology has thrown a wrench into this particular matrix. Technology, in all its forms, is helping us transition from the past to the future, from the known to the unknown, without four years and a diploma.

Do away with the system … no. Update it… absolutely. It helped get us this far, it can take us the rest of the way. If it changes and comes into the 21st Century. In this case, it needs to be reacquainted with its original purpose.

Let’s face it, paying 40, 50 or 60 thousand a year for 30 credits is what would be expected from a business. The Porsche fetches more than the Lexus. But is that what this has become?

Great article Mr. Ortiz. More please. 😉
