Fascinating stuff, James. I see no reason why the bias in academia would be any different that what we see in the corporate world or sports (NFL is a great and current example), or anywhere else.
History - that great fluid body of facts, falsehoods, myths and magical creatures - has always placed the man at the head of the story. Be it a story of dragons or great cultures, war or art, men are writing the narrative and starring in the "plays."
To change the bias we need to change the narrative, that men, you know, are simply better at things. They invented gravity and relativity and everyone knows, women can't hit a major league curve ball.
Men are frail creatures - we ALL are frail creatures, everyone of us at times - but men resist that premise the most. We have 10,000 years of momentum - of men being in charge, because they got the stones for it - and that's a lot of inertia to push aside. But push we must, if we're going to make meaningful progress.
