God, WW I was never going to achieve anything except prove that modern weapons worked. Seventy-year-old generals practicing 1860s tactics against machine guns, tanks, planes, gas, and on and on. I think the leaders saw this war as a chance to rearrange hierarchies and take Germany and their warring ways out of the picture. Oops, it didn’t work.
