People labor over decisions and once made they tend to not want to revisit them. Especially if they've been talking it up.

Trump is great, Trump is a god, Trump balanced the budget. All of which has to be repeated and supported otherwise - they were wrong. They made a bad decision. Can't do that - no matter what. Better to be dead than wrong.

It's the only thing that explains otherwise sane people from stating a vaccine is bad because some blogger in Helsinki replayed an old video clip from Rush Limbaugh.
