I lost my dad when I was 13. Never had those adult conversations with him. Never had the chance to reveal who I really was. But I've thought of him all the time - more in recent years as I got older. I used what experience I had with him to inform the role of father for my daughters.
It's in being a dad, and in being the provider and shouldering that responsibility, that the true value of my dad and who he was came into view.
I truly wish he was here right now. Sitting next to me, sharing our thoughts - learning.
