Having lived in the states all my life and watched the ebb and flow of sports, from the viewpoint of a fanatic and then later in life, from the more sedate position of a distant bystander, I can attest that Sports is not a microcosm of the rest of civilized life, but the other way around.

Athletes, like celebrities, are accorded a higher status in life because of their achievements, but also because of what those achievements allow them to possess.

Those undercurrents create some interesting perspectives on how life is supposed to be lived and certainly influence the environments in which normal people do live. Kind of similar to how warm sea currents create their own environments on nearby lands.
