Hey Jill - I understand your frustration. I have a strong feeling that it is shared by many. (Including me!)
A lot of my analogies in life relate back to food - so here's another.
If you're walking through a State Fair looking for some treats. Let's see:
Vegan stall
Organic fried chicken
Popcorn with butter ... or
Deep Fried Snicker Bars or Ho-Hos
6" deep dish pizza
Ice cream with M&Ms, Oreos and Fritos
You get the idea. People like silly, entertaining sweet foods and articles. Considering what's on the airwaves 24/7 I don't blame them. But often what is also on the airwaves is distraction. It's Survivor or The Bachelor or Housewives of Des Moines. Like cotton candy only it rots the brain and not the teeth.
So, we spend 8 hours writing something that is relevant, important and a good read and get 7 visitors. Whereas, How I Made $1000 in 6 Minutes on YouTube - get 4K reads. Even though it's a 5 minute video interviewing 8 people who make money on Youtube. It's circular marketing.
Best advice I got on dealing with this came from my wife. "F**k'em, just write what's meaningful to you." Yeah, she's from Detroit, no nonsense. Best of luck!
