We have ourselves to blame for a large part of this - complacency breeds disaster. But there is a contingent in America who truly believes that Greed is a virtue and Humanity - merely a collective noun for all the fucking people around them.

Go back to the 1968 presidential elections and immerse yourself for a few moments in the rationale of Richard Nixon. This is where politics went skidding off the tracks and left reality far behind.
