Letting go is the best solution I think in this situation. He's packing his own future with small landmines that he'll inevitably trip over. Losing a limb or worse yet, having to admit to himself that HE WAS WRONG! God forbid and shutter to think - but such realizations are common as one ages and the time to make up for past misdeeds becomes less and less. He'll bemoan his treatment as he sips his bitter tea and smokes his last Camel.
