Most people would like to believe that fantasies only happen in childhood. That when adulthood finally arrives they must jettison everything childlike, in preparation for the real world.
Seldom happens. Fantasies serve two main purposes. To distract and entertain and to help one cope with a world that is often overwhelming.
So, when the money is short, and the wife is gone, and dinner always seems to come in a box - then it's easy to look for and find a reason (out there) for it all.
Take a story, add some truth to it, and tell others it's real because it answers some questions and bam - Qanon.
Even the worst tabloid stories have some truth in them. It's the glue that holds it all together.
The greater the pain and perceived wrongs done to a person - the easier the fantasy takes hold.
And in our world today there are a lot of wrongs being done - sad but true. So, adding one more that's even a little out there, fits right in.
Good piece, George.
