Nobody benefits in the long run from complete subsidy as a human. Performance and productivity are important to an individual. Look at the idle rich as an example of what a life of no service or purpose does to the heart and soul of a person. This of course applies to a welfare recipient who uses this as their “employment” rather than an assist in life.
But a UBI … why not?
I don’t see a downside to it. It would mean channeling other gov’t funds away from a war budget and perhaps hefty corporate subsidies … but I would not weep if this came to pass.
I see more time spent at home for mothers and fathers. I see less stress on making the rent or mortgage. A UBI is by no stretch a panacea. People would still need to work hard but the concept just has a deep resonance to it; it makes sense.
Interesting to see how these changes in Germany impact their citizen’s lives.
