One of my favorite writers is — James Lee Burke. Found him a few years back. Never hear anyone talk about him; haven’t seen his books turned into movies (but I may be wrong on that). Point is, he doesn’t have a brand like King or Rowling but in my book, his writing is more emotionally powerful. Is he better — not my call and I don’t care. I just know that the label of best or top is meaningless in real terms because it is subjective. Stephen King is king by sales — don’t know of anyone who tops him — but best? Just a label and I guess I don’t like labels. They’re neat and ordering and people aren’t like that. We’re unruly, disorganized at times, don’t listen, don’t care, and like it, our own way. And as writers, we should be just like that — seeking our own paths and hopefully being supported along the way.
