The word religion comes from earlier terms meaning — to bind back or bind together — Religare. Common beliefs or fears binding a group of people together. In concept — sure why not — a little solace now and then. But in practice — it doesn’t work. Self-interest, obsessive control, and all the other human qualities that we aspire to get in the way and mess it up. Best to keep it far away from laws and governance — which parts of America seem incapable of doing.
