There are two key words (and all that they signify) that should be carved above the threshold of everyone's home or failing that, carried on a card in their wallets until the damn thing falls apart.

Blame v. Responsibility

Blame is mostly what you might think - he did it, she did it, they did it when I lived at home. The boss doesn't let me, the wife doesn't love me, on and on.

Blame is relentlessly selfish with someone else being the party that created the mess someone finds themselves in.

Responsibility on the other hand, has nothiong to do with blame. If a careless skateboader sends her skateboard crashing into your shin, thus breaking it, their action is to blame for your fracture. But it still leaves you with being fully responsible for your rehab, your day to day life, and your frame of mind throughout.

Your wife may cheat on you, but that doesn't alter the fact that you are still responsible for your marriage and to a certain extent the actions of your wife leading up to the adultery.

Responsibility is all about control - of your life and where its headfing. It's easy to blame the weather, the boss, the Dems, God or that effing fan that grabbed the foulbgall in 1997. But it doesn't resolve anything and never will.

Blame the SOB for dropping a box of nails on the freeway - but who's calling AAA to tow your car so you can get the tire fixed and then on to work? You are. That's responsibility.

Cheers on the article.
